Venerable Great Britain Kassapa Mahathera

Venerable Great Britain Kassapa Mahathera is a senior elder of the Theravadan Buddhist Order, who, having been born as a Protestant Christian, embraced Buddhism at the age of thirteen in 1976, & who ordained as a novice-monk at the age of fourteen years in 1977, under the auspices of the late famous missionary monk, Ven. Dr. Hammalawa Saddhatissa Mahanayaka Thera, at the London Buddhist Vihara in Chiswick, South West London, in England. Almost immediately following ordination, he travelled to Sri Lanka to reside, & to study & meditate.

He recieved full ordination as a monk in his twentieth year, & has spent well over forty years as a fully ordained monk, & spent around a quarter of a century in Asia, over twenty-one of those years having been spent in Sri Lanka, over a period stretching from 1977 upto present. He regards Sri Lanka as his Ancient Spiritual Home, & as the “Ancient Palace Of Theravada Buddhism”, as the “Foster Mother Of Pure Theravada Buddhism”, & as a “little Buddhist Heaven on Earth”.

He returned to re-reside in the U.K. in 2010, & has served the Buddhist Society, in Victoria, Central London, since 2015, where he conducts regular Meditation Sessions. He also works as Spiritual Adviser to a U.K. registered Charity Foundation dedicated to the protection & preservation of the ancient Buddhist Cultural Heritage of Sri Lanka.

Ven. G.B. Kassapa's Objectives in his life are threefold, viz. :

  • His International “Dhammaduta” Buddhist (“missionary”) work, & the Spiritual Welfare of Humankind at large.
  • The protection & preservation of the Buddhist Cultural World Heritage of Sri Lanka, & of the world at large, &
  • His own personal Spiritual Development.

Saddhaloka Vihara

Venerable Kassapa Mahathera lives in Saddhaloka Vihara. Situated in a leafy & prestigious suburb of South West London, this very sought after & desirable location is relatively very Conservative, very English, & very Christian, being home to many wealthy people & celebrities, & being one of the most unique & special areas in the Nation’s capital.
Saddhaloka Vihara is a private Bhikkhu residence and not a place of worship for the general public.

The public can meet Venerable Kassapa in person at the Buddhist Society in Victoria, Central London, on Wednesdays & Saturdays each week, where he conducts regular Meditation Sessions and on certain occasions in Sri Lankan Temples around London.

On Wednesdays he can be met at 1.20 p.m., during or after the Questions & Answers segment of the Lunchtime Meditation Session, & on Saturdays he can be met at 4.00 p.m., during or after the Questions & Answers segment of the Afternoon Meditation Session, at the Buddhist Society in Victoria, Central London.
